Monster Fish for Sale in the UK

MTF Aquatics specialises in the extraordinary. We stock rare and impressive large predatory fish — commonly known as monster fish — for experienced aquarists who want something genuinely different in their aquarium.

Our monster fish are sourced via transhipping directly from specialist breeders and exporters in South America, South-East Asia and West Africa. Every fish is covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee.

Monster Fish Species We Stock

Florida Gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus)

The Red Florida Gar is a prehistoric predator with an elongated, heavily armoured body and a long, toothed snout. Native to Florida’s rivers and lakes, the Florida Gar is a surface predator that hunts by ambush. Despite its aggressive appearance, it is relatively passive with fish too large to eat. At 9–10″, it is already an impressive specimen — adults can reach over 60cm in captivity. The Red morph is significantly rarer than the wild-type and commands a premium price.

Peacock Bass (Cichla spp.)

Peacock Bass are among the most visually spectacular large cichlids in the world. The Short Body Kelberi Peacock Bass is a captive-bred variant with compressed, deep body proportions that accentuate its striking green and gold barred patterning. Highly aggressive and voraciously predatory, Peacock Bass must be kept only with fish too large to swallow. They respond well to large meaty foods — prawns, earthworms and quality cichlid pellets.

Hoplias Aimara (Giant Wolf Fish)

The Hoplias Aimara — known as the Giant Wolf Fish or Trahira — is one of the most powerful and aggressive freshwater predators available in the hobby. Native to South America, it possesses a fearsome set of canine-like teeth and explosive speed when striking. This is strictly a specialist fish for experienced keepers with appropriate facilities. It can reach over 70cm and should be kept alone or only with very large, robust tank mates.

Polypterus / Bichir

Polypterus are living fossils — ancient, armoured fish with a unique dual-lung system that allows them to breathe air. The Mokelembembe Bichir (Polypterus mokelembembe) is a rarer West African species with attractive spotted patterning. Polypterus are predatory but far more tractable than most monster fish — they can be kept with fish too large to eat and will tolerate tank mates well. They are nocturnal hunters and do best with a cave or hiding spot.

Datnoid (Tigerfish)

The 3-Bar Datnoid (Datnioides microlepis) is sometimes called the Siamese Tigerfish and is one of the most impressive-looking predatory fish in the hobby. Its bold black-and-gold vertical banding makes it an exceptional display fish. Datnoids are large — reaching 40–60cm — and are predatory, but considerably less aggressive than species like Hoplias. They can be housed with other large fish that won’t fit in their mouth.

Monster Fish Care — Key Principles

Tank Size

Monster fish require large tanks — as a rule, the tank should be at least 3× the adult body length in its longest dimension. Most species we stock require a minimum 5–6ft tank as adults, with many requiring 6–8ft or custom builds.

Filtration

Large predatory fish produce significant waste. A high-capacity filtration system is non-negotiable — ideally a sump with mechanical pre-filtration, biological media, and UV sterilisation. Canister filters can supplement but rarely suffice as a primary system for large predators. See our filtration guide for monster fish.

Water Parameters

Most South American monster fish prefer soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5–7.0, GH under 10 dGH) at 26–28°C. South-East Asian species such as Datnoid tolerate a slightly higher pH (7.0–7.5). Regardless of species, zero ammonia and nitrite is mandatory — large predators are often surprisingly sensitive to water quality.

Feeding

All our monster fish are predatory. Feed large earthworms, prawns, mussel, and quality large pellets. Feeder fish are strongly discouraged — they carry disease and provide poor nutrition. Most large predators can be transitioned to quality frozen or pellet food with patience.
