Freshwater Stingrays for Sale in the UK
MTF Aquatics is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of rare freshwater stingrays. We source our stingrays directly from specialist breeders in South America and South-East Asia via transhipping — which means shorter transit times, less stress on the fish, and healthier specimens arriving at your door.
Every stingray we sell is covered by our Live Arrival Guarantee. If your fish arrives in poor condition, we replace or refund — no quibble.
Freshwater Stingray Species We Stock
Motoro Stingray (Potamotrygon motoro)
The Motoro is the most popular freshwater stingray in the hobby and a superb entry point for experienced aquarists moving into elasmobranchs. Known for its distinctive orange-ringed dorsal pattern, the Motoro is relatively robust compared to other stingray species. Females grow larger than males, and a 6″ disc size female is an impressive specimen. Tank size should be a minimum of 5ft × 3ft for an adult.
Snow White Pearl Stingray
The Snow White Pearl Stingray is one of the most visually striking freshwater stingrays available anywhere in the world. Its pale, almost luminescent body with fine pearlescent spotting makes it an exceptional centrepiece fish. These are high-value specimens and require an experienced keeper — but the reward is a truly unique aquarium animal. MTF Aquatics regularly stocks both male and female Snow White Pearls, including large adults at 11-12″.
Albino Pearl Stingray
Even rarer than the Snow White Pearl, the Albino Pearl Stingray is a genuine collector’s specimen. The albino gene produces a striking golden-cream colouration with red eyes. Very few UK suppliers carry albino specimens — MTF Aquatics sources these directly through our transhipping contacts in South America.
Freshwater Stingray Care Requirements
Tank Size
Freshwater stingrays need space — they are active, wide-bodied fish that spend most of their time on the substrate. At minimum:
- Small/medium specimens (under 8″ disc): 4ft × 2ft tank
- Medium/large specimens (8″–12″ disc): 5ft × 3ft tank
- Large adults (12″+): 6ft × 3ft or larger
A bare bottom or fine sand substrate is essential — coarse gravel damages the ventral surface.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 26–30°C
- pH: 6.0–7.0 (soft, slightly acidic)
- GH: 0–8 dGH (soft water)
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 at all times — stingrays are extremely sensitive
- Nitrate: below 20 ppm
Stingrays will not tolerate poor water quality. A high-capacity filtration system — ideally a sump — is strongly recommended. See our filtration guide for monster fish and sensitive species.
Feeding
Freshwater stingrays are carnivores. They accept earthworms, prawns, bloodworm and mussel. Avoid feeder fish — they carry disease and offer poor nutrition. Quality frozen foods are preferred once the fish has settled.
Compatibility
Keep stingrays with large, peaceful fish that will not nip their disc or compete aggressively for food. Suitable tankmates include large Oscars, large Silver Dollars, and Pacu — though tank size must be planned around the needs of all inhabitants.
Legal Considerations
All freshwater stingray species available through MTF Aquatics are legally imported and do not require CITES documentation (unlike their marine cousins and some exotic catfish). They are, however, covered by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 in the UK — so some local councils require a licence to keep them. Always check with your local authority before purchasing.
