Custom Fish Portrait Art: Turn Your Fish into a One-of-a-Kind Masterpiece

Most fish photography does a reasonable job of documenting what a fish looks like. It rarely captures what makes that fish worth keeping.

The colouration of a full-colour Super Red Arowana. The geometry of a well-grown Blue Eyed Pleco. The presence of a mature Motoro Stingray on white sand. These are things that a snapshot rarely does justice to.

The MTF AI Fish Portrait takes your photo and transforms it into artwork — in five distinct styles, at full resolution, for less than the cost of a good lunch.

Five portrait styles

Photorealistic

Enhances and reinterprets your photo as high-resolution photographic art. Improved lighting, sharpened detail, enhanced colour saturation — the fish as it looks at its best, rather than how a phone camera caught it.

Best for: Arowana, Stingrays, large Plecos where the natural detail is the point.

Watercolour

Soft washes, visible brushwork, and the characteristic bleeding of colour that makes watercolour distinctive. Works exceptionally well with Discus, Bettas, and fish with complex colour gradients — the style complements the natural blending of colour.

Best for: Discus, Betta splendens, Altum Angelfish, Peacock Cichlids.

Pencil sketch

Fine-line pencil rendering with tonal shading. Detailed and precise, with the character that comes from a hand-drawn appearance. High-contrast fish — Dalmatian Mollies, black and white variants — render particularly well in this style.

Best for: fish with strong pattern definition, black/white or dark/light contrast species.

Pop art

Bold flat colour, strong outlines, and the visual energy of 1960s graphic art. Produces the most striking and eye-catching result — designed to stand out. Works best with fish that have simple, bold colouration.

Best for: Goldfish, brightly coloured Discus strains, Flowerhorn Cichlids, Koi.

Oil painting

Impasto texture, rich colour depth, and the weight that comes with the oil painting aesthetic. The most traditional of the five styles and the one that reads most immediately as “art” in a domestic setting.

Best for: large statement fish — Arowana, Arapaima, large Cichlids — where the gravitas of the style matches the scale of the subject.

How it works

Step 1. Visit mtf-aquatics.co.uk/ai-fish-portrait and upload a photo of your fish.

Best results come from a clear, well-lit photo with the fish in frame. Side-on shots work well for most styles. Overhead shots work for flat species like Stingrays. A cluttered background is fine — the AI focuses on the fish.

Step 2. The AI generates six free previews — one in each of the five styles, plus one additional variant. All previews are watermarked.

Step 3. Choose the style you want. Pay to unlock the full-resolution, unwatermarked version — from £10. Or order it on merchandise.

Download or order merchandise

Once you’ve unlocked your portrait, you have two options:

Download the image — full-resolution, print-ready file. Use it however you want: frame it, use it as a phone wallpaper, print it yourself, or take it to a local print shop.

Order on merchandise — hoodie, mug, or t-shirt. Printed to order and shipped to you. The portrait is printed directly on the item — no iron-on, no transfer, just direct print on quality material.

Merchandise options and current pricing are shown at checkout.

Species that photograph particularly well

Arowana — the full-body profile of a large Silver, Asian, or Super Red Arowana in the oil painting style is striking. The scale detail and the mouth structure translate well into photorealistic and pencil styles too.

Discus — the circular profile and intricate colouration of Discus, particularly turquoise, pigeon blood, and red strains, produce exceptional watercolour portraits. The style complements the colour blending naturally found in the fish.

L-number Plecos — the armour plating, spot patterns, and fins of Royal Plecos, Medusa Plecos, and Blue-Eyed Plecos render with unusual detail in pencil and photorealistic styles.

Stingrays — the Motoro Stingray photographed from above (natural feeding position) in oil painting style has produced some of the most dramatic results we’ve seen from the tool.

Bettas — the finnage of a good show-quality Betta in watercolour is exactly what the style was made for.

Cichlids — Peacocks and Haplochromines in pop art produce the most vibrant results. The bold colour and strong definition translate perfectly to the flat-colour graphic style.

As a gift

The portrait is one of the few gifts that works for fish keepers who already have everything they need for their tanks.

If you know someone who keeps fish — particularly someone who keeps fish they’re genuinely proud of — a portrait of their best specimen is something they won’t buy for themselves and won’t be able to get anywhere else.

Order with the recipient’s photo (ask them for a good photo of their favourite fish), choose the style, and order the merchandise shipped to their address. The whole process takes about ten minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What photo quality do I need? A reasonably clear photo taken in decent light. Smartphone photos work fine. The AI can work with imperfect images, but sharpness and good lighting improve the output. If you have multiple photos, upload the clearest one.

Can I get portraits of multiple fish? Yes — run a separate portrait session for each fish. Each session generates six previews.

Can I order the same portrait in multiple styles? Yes. After generating your previews, you can unlock and order each style separately.

What sizes does the merchandise come in? Sizing, colour options, and product specifications are shown at the product stage during checkout.

Is the full-resolution download suitable for large-format printing? Yes. The output is generated at print resolution. The exact pixel dimensions depend on the original photo — higher-resolution source photos produce larger printable outputs.

Can I use the portrait commercially? The portrait is licensed for personal use. For commercial use enquiries, contact us directly.
