Black Arowana (Osteoglossum ferreirai)

The Black Arowana is one of the most sought-after freshwater fish in the world. Native to the Rio Negro basin in Brazil, juveniles are strikingly coloured with dark black bodies and vivid orange-tipped fins — colouration that fades as they mature into their adult silver-grey form. Black Arowana are one of the largest freshwater fish in the hobby, reaching up to 90cm in the aquarium. They are predators that feed primarily from the water surface and will accept large earthworms, prawns and live crickets.

Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum)

The Silver Arowana is the most widely kept species and a superb introduction to the genus. It is a powerful jumper — a tight-fitting lid is essential — and requires a very large tank as an adult. Despite their size, Silver Arowana can be kept with other large fish that are too big to be eaten. They are remarkably intelligent and often recognise their keeper.

Asian Arowana (Scleropages formosus)

The Asian Arowana — also known as the Dragon Fish — is one of the most iconic and expensive fish in the world. It is listed under CITES Appendix I, meaning all specimens sold in the UK must be captive-bred and accompanied by full CITES documentation. Arowana Care Requirements

Tank Size

Arowana grow large and fast. Tank sizing by life stage:

• Juvenile (under 25cm): minimum 4ft × 2ft
• Sub-adult (25–50cm): minimum 5ft × 2.5ft
• Adult (50cm+): minimum 6ft × 2.5ft — ideally 8ft+

Height matters less than footprint. Arowana cruise horizontally near the surface and need width and length to turn comfortably.

Water Parameters

• Temperature: 26–30°C
• pH: 6.0–7.0 (slightly acidic)
• GH: 2–10 dGH
• Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 at all times
• Nitrate: below 30 ppm

Feeding

Arowana are surface predators. They accept large earthworms, prawns, mussel, large crickets and other insects. High-quality pellet foods such as Hikari and Tetra can be trained onto as a staple — reducing reliance on live or fresh food. Avoid goldfish and other feeder fish, which carry significant disease risk.

Compatibility

Arowana can be kept with large tank mates that are too big to be eaten — large catfish (e.g. Shovelnose), large Oscars, large Silver Dollars, and Pacu work well. Avoid anything that fits in the Arowana’s mouth.
