Description
A tiger moray eel, also known as the freshwater leopard moray eel, requires a large, spacious aquarium with a soft sand substrate, lots of hiding places, and a moderate water current. The water temperature should be between 24–28°C.
Tank size
- A single adult eel needs a minimum of 75–100 gallons
- Larger tanks are better for dealing with waste
Tank setup
- Include live rock for hiding places
- Provide a gentle current along the sand bed
- Add areas of moderate water movement and some quieter resting areas
- MUST HAVE secure lids, if you don’t, they will jump out… you have been warned!
Water conditions
- Maintain a high KH
- Perform frequent partial water changes to keep nitrate levels low
- Consider adding saltwater to improve long-term health
Diet
- Feed the eel 2–3 times a week
- Offer large live or frozen foods like fish, squid, shrimp, earthworms, krill, prawns, and mussel
- Avoid feeding pork, which is too fat
Tankmates
- Avoid housing them with small, slow-moving fish
- They may be kept in groups with other placid species that are too large to swallow
Handling
- Avoid handling the eel directly, as they can be stressed easily
- Use tongs or a net if necessary for cleaning or maintenance
